Holding Up: A New Prison Legacy is a multi-media theater production that tells the true stories of families affected by the incarceration of 70,000 men and women, throughout Pennsylvania. It gives voice to the legacy that crime and imprisonment have on children growing up with parents in prison, and to the women who are struggling to hold up their communities alone while their men are behind bars. It also shares the true stories of male prisoners who are attempting to heal their fragile family relationships.

The production is a collaboration between TOVA, the visionary men of the Public Safety Initiative at the State Correctional Institution at Graterford, PA, and the Pennsylvania Prison Society. HOLDING UP was created during months of workshops and interviews with prisoners at Graterford, and with mothers, daughters, and spouses of prisoners. During the current production tour, former prisoners play the parts of the incarcerated men. The children, mothers, and loved-ones of prisoners play themselves.

HOLDING UP includes video interviews with children of incarcerated parents by award winning filmmaker, Rachel Libert, as well as original music by Dan Kleiman. A photo exhibit by Howard Zehr and Lorraine Stutzman Amstutz with children of prisoners will accompany the show.
